There are many techniques, and few teachers, that lead us to enter the practice of meditation. Someone said that when we pray we talk to God, and when we meditate we listen to God. The act of listening is a personal and non-transferable act, just as personal is the decision to choose the way to achieve listening.
Techniques are tools that help, teachers teach different ways, but it is we who determine the way to hear God, and this can be our own formula based on the intention and the will to listen.
Paramahansa Yogananda (India 1893-US.1952) is the first great spiritual master who lived and taught in the West. Through his teachings he exerted a great influence on millions of people, particularly with the science of Kriya Yoga meditation. In 1946 he published one of the greatest spiritual works of all time, Autobiography of a Yogi.
